CHAPTER EIGHT

“I can ask, but I know the woman who was cleaning your section of the resort today, and she’s never had any complaints against her before,” Lena said. Tulia could hear the clacking of a keyboard over the phone. “Yeah, I just double-checked—she marked your room as clean just after noon. She’s been with us for over a decade, and I’ve known her ever since I started working here. She’s a nice woman, honest, takes this job seriously. I just can’t see her doing something like that. Is anything missing?”

Tulia looked over to Angela, who was listening in. She had the call on speakerphone. Her friend shook her head.

“Not that we found,” Tulia said. “It looks like whoever it was just went through our things and left.”

“The cleaner is coming back in tomorrow morning. I’ll ask her when she gets here. I can almost guarantee you, though, it wasn’t her. If it makes you more comfortable, I’ll make sure someone else is assigned to clean your bungalow instead.”

“Maybe that would be best,” Tulia said, though she felt bad even as she said it. She didn’t want to get an innocent woman in trouble. “From what you said, it does sound like it probably wasn’t her, but I’d rather err on the side of caution. Is there any way someone else could have gotten a key to our bungalow?”

“Well, the staff all have master keys, but they only get them after they’ve been here for three months. We do thorough background checks on everyone who works here, so while it’s possible one of the staff members used their keycard to access your bungalow, I don’t think it’s very likely. Especially if nothing was missing. Are you sure your door was shut and locked?”

“I’m sure,” Tulia said. She had gotten into the habit of checking that her door was locked every time she went somewhere, whether she was leaving the RV or a hotel room or, in this case, the bungalow.

“I’ll keep my ear to the ground for you, but I’m really not sure what to…” Lena trailed off.

“What is it?” Tulia asked.

“I just remembered … Derrick’s keycard was missing. The police said they couldn’t find it on his body, or his ID card. Shoot, I don’t think I was supposed to spread that around. Please don’t tell anyone I told you. I think it’s part of the investigation. I could get in trouble.”

“Does that mean whoever killed him has the key?” Angela asked, her voice going high. She leaned toward the phone, her hands grabbing the edge of the table. “Are you telling us whoever broke into our room was the person who murdered him?”

“I’m not saying that,” Lena said quickly. “I was just thinking out loud. I shouldn’t have said anything.”

“Can you remove that key’s ability to access the rooms?” Tulia asked.

“I know it’s possible, but I don’t think I have the power to do it,” Lena said. “I’ll have to call my boss—the general manager—and ask her to do it.
